What is the Natural Newaygo Resource and Activity Guide?

Natural Newaygo is an environmental education guide, developed to coordinate with the Newaygo County 3rd and 4th grade curriculum. It is meant to help educators deliver locally-specific environmental education to Newaygo County youth, and to ultimately foster a greater sense of environmental stewardship among students and their families.

Natural Newaygo is also meant to serve as a resource guide for Newaygo County educators. Information on local resource professionals, conservation organizations, and local natural areas are included in this guide. Educators are also encouraged to add their own materials to the guide to further personalize Natural Newaygo for their classrooms and communities.

What is the goal of the Natural Newaygo Resource and Activity Guide?

The goal of integrating Natural Newaygo into the classroom is to increase environmental literacy and develop a stewardship ethic among Newaygo County students. Ultimately we want to help students develop an appreciation and understanding of the natural world, and provide them the skills and knowledge base to explore the natural world around them.

Natural Newaygo is designed to achieve the following result with students.

1. Increase awareness of the natural world in which we all live.

2. Develop a greater appreciation for the natural world and all that live in it.

3. Influence how students act and react to the natural world around them.

Ultimately, the goal of this activity guide is to help students develop a deeper understanding of the environment in which they live. By gaining a deeper understanding, students will hopefully develop a sense of respect and, ultimately, love for the natural world. This gained appreciation translates into a behavioral change. Those that appreciate the natural world are those that serve as stewards of it.

Why was the Natural Newaygo Resource and Activity Guide developed?

The Natural Newaygo Resource and Activity Guide is a product of the Brooks Township Land Use Vision Project , and funding was provided in large part through a generous grant from the Fremont Area Community Foundation.

Written by township residents, officials and natural resource professionals, the Brooks Township Land Use Vision identifies the valued natural resources of the Newaygo area, the threats to those resources, and recommends 72 strategies for protecting and conserving natural resources. Many of the recommended strategies focus on educational efforts, including efforts aimed at youth in the Newaygo area. This curriculum-coordinated resource and activity guide is one of the ways the Brooks Township Land Use Vision Project hopes to affect positive change in attitudes and behaviors toward the environment in Newaygo County.
